The Journey from Auction to Artistry

A Story…

In December last year, a client of long-standing made an appointment to see me – to commission a necklace for his wife.

He is a lover of gemstones and buys interesting pieces which take his fancy.

He showed me a little gem box with three yellow stones which he recently bought on auction and asked me to confirm that they indeed were citrines, as described in the auction catalogue. The price he paid was fairly modest.

In the box they looked very convincing. But, sadly, on closer examination they turned out to be Cubic Zirconias. He was quite upset – mostly because he loved the colour and cut of the stones, and thought they would look perfect on his wife. He felt that maybe they should just be thrown away.

But we discussed it and came to the conclusion that they now had a story to tell, and I suggested that we design a delicate Negligée Pendant, using all three stones, on a silver chain with silver and gold settings.

We went ahead with making the necklace, but sadly one of the “citrines” cracked in the process. A search through our own collection of loose gemstones found a pair of genuine round checker-board citrines which matched in colour perfectly, and we decided to replace two of his stones with these.

The price of our own stones was such that we could set them in his necklace and absorb the cost within our quote.

He is delighted with the result - and we have now had a big "thumbs-up" from his wife!
