October Opal

This “Queen of gems”, Shakespeare called it. Impossible to resist for its sheer celebration of colour and beautiful opalescence.

Opal’s meaning comes from the Greek word Opallios, meaning to see a change. It is the product of thousands of years of natural formation where a silica type gel seeped into the rocks of the earth and hardened into opal.

Two broad classes of opal exist – precious and common. Precious opals show extraordinary flashes of colour, with red being considered the most valuable. The bluish/green stones are less valuable, but no less enchanting. The rarest opal is called a Harlequin Opal, and displays colour patterns resembling a checkerboard.

Common opal is more opaque – with names such as Peruvian Opal and Andes Opal, you will find it in soft pinks, blues and turquoises. Opal is a delicate, porous gem which is certainly worth the effort of caring for if you are lucky enough to own one!
