“Real” pearls can be natural or are cultured.
In 1893 Japanese businessman Kokichi Mikimoto created the first cultured pearl. The process of culturing requires an irritant to be introduced into the oyster (or mussel for freshwater pearls). The use of this process has resulted in a huge variety of pearls being freely available.
The design opportunities for pearls are limitless owing to their flexibility and timeless appeal. The traditional pearl necklace, worn with the classic “twin-set” of the mid 20th century, is no longer the go-to of pearl jewellery.
Round or baroque, small or large, in strings, matched pairs or individually exotic shapes they are the most flattering of jewels.
