December Tanzanite
Tanzanite is a transparent violet-blue gem that is formed when the brownish Zoisite is exposed to high heat.
It is found only in the Merelani hills in Tanzania. It can exhibit a slight colour change with a blue daylight tinge and a more violet hue in the evening. It is believed to have been discovered by a Masai herdsman, when the normally brown stones turned purple and blue after an intense veld fire. They alerted a prospector and mining started. In 1967 the name Tanzanite was coined by Tiffany and Co.
Tanzanite tends to be regarded as quite a “dressy” stone – most often seen surrounded by diamonds. As it is quite a brittle stone, it is best set in earrings or necklaces, where it is less likely to take a knock.
Latterly, uncut rough material has become available, and art jewelers create wonderful pieces which are suitable for day wear.
